Seaworthiness
Aspects
that make Monsoon seaworthy are the strong, heavy, big and round 70 ton steel hull,
the all over robust construction, the undersized masts and oversized rigging with the 4 furlers,
the big main engine with lots of fuel, the powerful and efficient Hundested
propellor, (diameter 3 ft), the indestructable Wagner hydraulic rudder (SS rudderstock diameter 3 inch) and furthermore a full
package of recent reliable electronics. (First the 3 GPS's, than the autopilot, third the Furuno NAVNET radar, sounder, plotter) With all her other gear in total these make Monsoon into the absolute
NO NONSENSE WORLD CRUISER.

The
notorious Pacific Fastnet storm
of June
1994, Kermadecs Pacific / New Zealand:
3 lifes lost and 8 boats lost here.
And we? We
just motorsailed with only tripple reefed mainsail, 60 degrees upwind, direction
NZ, away from the storm path and enjoyed it. Arriving in Auckland and direct on the 6 oclock TV news. magine !!!
On the foto: Screwing stormpanels on the windows of the deckhouse because the
seas were getting bigger. We estimated an ultimate hight of approx 8 meters = 27 ft. At one point we were closer to the centre than most others.
